Shrewsbury Town manager Gavin Cowan recently admitted that his club had made an approach for former striker Daniel Udoh this summer, but the striker is currently out of reach due to his ambitions in League One. Cowan, who previously managed Udoh at AFC Telford United, revealed his interest during a recent match against Salford City.

Cowan stated, 'With Daniel, he's a little bit past us at the moment, is the truth,' acknowledging that Udoh is a League One player with a price tag to match. The Shrewsbury boss explained that Udoh is currently focused on cementing a place at Salford and getting promoted with them. Cowan added, 'I think he’s being sought after by a lot of League One clubs.'

Despite the club's interest, Cowan emphasized the importance of respecting Udoh's ambitions and his connection to Salford. 'Of course I would not be doing my job if I wasn’t asking questions. I make a point of, when I do speak to Daniel, not having those discussions with him because it’s not comfortable,' Cowan said.

Udoh scored 26 goals for Cowan’s Telford side before joining Shrewsbury in 2019. The Nigerian striker spent five years at the club until 2024, scoring 38 goals in 181 appearances for Town. He left Shrewsbury on a free transfer for Wycombe in 2024 and spent a single season there, scoring 10 goals. Udoh then moved to Salford last summer.

Shrewsbury Town has been operating under a transfer fee embargo during the summer window, meaning only free agents and loan signings are available to the club until the September 2 deadline. Cowan's admission highlights the club's ongoing interest in Udoh and the challenges they face in bringing him back to the club.
