Shrewsbury Town supporter groups have urged owner Roland Wycherley to work quickly to finalise a proposed takeover of the League Two club. Their call came in response to an open letter from Wycherley, who has owned the club for three decades, addressing questions about its future.
The collective of ten fan organisations said Wycherley's comments strengthened their belief that the consortium led by Miami-based businessman Scott Davidson is the right group to take the club forward. They noted that due diligence on the prospective new owners had been thorough and that public information showed the consortium possessed the necessary funds.
"We thank you for the response from yourself and the board of directors to our open letter," the supporter groups said. "We appreciate the transparency you have shown here and in the three club statements released over the past fortnight."
In his letter, Wycherley thanked supporters for their own open letter and acknowledged his 30 years of service. He stated that if the deal with Davidson's group fell through, the club would still have a competitive budget for this season and the next. However, he reiterated that new investment and ownership is "what Shrewsbury Town urgently needs".
The supporter groups also expressed their gratitude for Wycherley's long tenure. "We thank you for more than 30 years of dedicated service to our football club," they said. "It will not be forgotten."
They highlighted the consortium's community focus as being in keeping with the club's values and pointed to Davidson's knowledge of British football through his experience with Scottish club Spartans. The group seeking control has already been approved by the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator.
The fan groups said they are now looking forward to hearing more detailed plans from the consortium about their vision for Shrewsbury. The club's recent form, with just one win in their last five league matches, has left them in 18th place in the standings. They have accumulated seven points from a possible 21, a total they will be desperate to improve starting with this weekend's home fixtures against Colchester United. A deeper look at the team's stats shows they have scored an average of one goal per game while conceding 1.3, numbers the new owners will hope to address.
The response was jointly signed by the STFC Official Supporters’ Club, Salopcast, South Stand Flags, Away Travel Club, Super Blues Committee, STFC Her Game Too Ambassador, Blue and Amber Fanzine, Proud Salopians, STFC Away Supporters and the Salopchat Messageboard.
