Shrewsbury Town have moved to cover an injury to their goalkeeping department by re-signing Cameron Gregory on a short-term deal. The 26-year-old returns to Oteley Road after Sam Proctor, the 19-year-old second-choice keeper, picked up a knock.
Gregory is expected to go straight onto the bench for Saturday's local derby at Crewe Alexandra's Gresty Road. The club, currently 18th in League Two with seven points from seven games, are seeking their first away point of the season at the fourth attempt. This follows a 1-1 draw with Crewe just last week, a result that halted a run of two consecutive away defeats. The team's recent form has seen them accumulate 7 points from their last 6 matches.
Manager Gavin Cowan highlighted the logic behind the move. "With Sam Proctor's injury, it's great to be able to bring someone in who is connected to the club, knows the area and, importantly, is a very good goalkeeper," Cowan said. The boss previously worked with Gregory during a spell at non-league Brackley Town, and the goalkeeper is a product of Shrewsbury's own academy.
Cowan added that Gregory's return was a welcome one, noting the player's talent and local roots. "I'm really pleased to welcome Cameron back to the club," he stated.
The move comes as Shrewsbury build on the momentum of last week's 2-0 home win over Northampton Town. Their immediate focus shifts to the trip to Crewe, with the full fixtures list showing a home game against 15th-placed Colchester United to follow next weekend. Off the pitch, the proposed American takeover of the club advanced this week as two more consortium members, Craig Graham and Will Dotson, received regulatory approval from the Independent Football Regulator.
