Shrewsbury Town suffer opening loss in League Two
Shrewsbury Town boss Gavin Cowan refused to get bogged down by their opening League Two defeat. Salop were beaten 2-0 by Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park, with goals either side of half-time condemning Cowan’s side to a losing start.
Shrewsbury Town suffered a 2-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers in their opening League Two game of the season. The team created chances in the first half but were unable to capitalize on them.
Why it matters for Shrewsbury
The defeat is a setback for Shrewsbury Town, but Cowan believes the team has a lot to be positive about. He pointed out that the team has a new group of players and that they need to be better in both boxes.
Shrewsbury Town will look to bounce back from the defeat in their next game. They are currently 22nd in the League Two table with 0 points from 1 game, 3 points behind leaders Walsall. Their next fixture is against Oldham on February 27, 2027, at Oldham's home ground.
Shrewsbury Town boss Gavin Cowan was keen not to get emotional about the defeat. He said, “Always, positive and negative. I think anyone with reason and logic today will see that there’s a lot to be buoyant about compared to this time last year.”
Cowan understands the frustration of the supporters and admitted he shares it. “It’s hard, because I know our supporters will be emotional about losing the game and I get that,” he said. “We are to an extent, but we have to have a little bit of reason and logic and it's a long season.”
He added, “Ultra-frustration. Myself and the group will allow ourselves to feel low today, analyse it and feel a little bit depressed about it tomorrow. And then Monday, we’ve just got to hit the ground running. The great thing about the way we play is we know what we need to do better and today it’s both boxes.”
