Shrewsbury Town's new goalkeeper reveals lessons from World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez
Shrewsbury Town's new goalkeeper Sam Proctor has revealed how training with World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa has shaped his development. The 19-year-old joined the Salopians on a season-long loan last week, becoming the club's eighth summer signing.
Proctor, who made his first appearance for Shrewsbury in Tuesday's pre-season victory over Everton Under-21s, spoke highly of the impact Martinez has had on his game. "Having Emi Martinez, a World Cup and Copa America winner, he’s been quite the guy to learn from," Proctor said. "I learn from him every day. Just watching him has helped my development massively."
What did Proctor learn from Martinez?
Proctor explained that Martinez's presence at Aston Villa has been instrumental in his growth as a goalkeeper. "There’s a lot of other players throughout the team who have helped me and put an arm around me when I’ve needed it," he added. "There are a lot of players who have been there and helped me along the way."
The teenager's journey at Villa has seen him progress through the age groups, culminating in involvement with the first team last season. He was even named in matchday squads for UEFA Champions League fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain.
What does this mean for Shrewsbury?
Proctor's arrival at Shrewsbury provides him with his first taste of Football League football. He will compete with Will Brook for the number one shirt as the club looks to improve on their 19th-place finish in League Two last season, where they finished 38 points behind leaders Bromley.
Shrewsbury's recent form has been inconsistent, with the team losing their last two matches and drawing three of their previous five. The addition of Proctor could provide a much-needed boost in goal as they prepare for the new campaign.
What's next for Proctor?
Proctor is eager to make an impact at Shrewsbury and believes his experience with Aston Villa's first team has prepared him well. "I think that experience with the first team last year has helped me massively coming into senior football this year," he said. "I got a little taste of a bit last season. Now I feel like I am finally ready to indulge in some games."
The goalkeeper's loan move to Shrewsbury marks a significant step in his career, and fans will be hoping he can bring some of the lessons learned from Martinez to the Croud Meadow.
