Shrewsbury Town Manager Gavin Cowan Challenges Young Talent Will Gray
Shrewsbury Town manager Gavin Cowan has laid down the challenge to young talent Will Gray, who recently signed his first professional contract with the club. The 17-year-old impressed after breaking into the first-team picture at the end of last season and is now set for a bright future with Salop.
Gray's progress this summer has been impressive, as he made his debut in the EFL Trophy last August before featuring in League Two fixtures during the latter stages of the previous campaign. His recent signing of a three-year professional deal further cements his place within the club’s plans for the coming season.
Cowan acknowledges that Gray faces stiff competition from established players such as Jay Turner-Cook, Isaac England, Tom Sang, Isaac Fletcher, and Jack Price. However, he believes in Gray's potential and is confident that with the right mentality and continued hard work, the young midfielder can play an important role for Shrewsbury Town.
Cowan highlighted Gray’s focus on football as one of his key strengths: \ ‘He loves and adores football. It’s all he thinks about. So, that’s a positive. As long as we can keep him concentrating on football, keep him developing, and trust in us, I’d like to think he's got a really bright future.’
Gray is one of several homegrown talents who have featured for Shrewsbury throughout pre-season. The club has secured the highly-rated youngster on a contract running until 2029, following a similar agreement with fellow academy graduate Isaac England.
Cowan’s admiration for Gray extends beyond his love and passion for football. He believes that keeping Gray focused on his game will be key to unlocking his potential: \ ‘He can, he can, he’s got to work hard. He’s obviously got to get in the team. But I think one of Will’s strengths is a mentality, he keeps things very simple. As I’ve said, I think he’s very focused on his football. I don't think there’s a lot outside of football that matters to him.
So, as long as we can keep him focused on that, he’s going to give himself every chance, I’m sure.’
Will Gray's journey with Shrewsbury Town continues, and the club is optimistic about his future. With Cowan’s support and encouragement, Gray will be looking to make a significant impact in the coming season.
