Shrewsbury Town's EFL Trophy campaign suffered a setback with a 2-0 home defeat to Stockport County on Tuesday. The loss at New Meadow leaves them with a difficult path to progress from the group stage.
Jason Adigun broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 75th minute, finishing an assist from Mikael Mandron. Ten minutes later, Che Gardner sealed the win with his first senior goal for Stockport, set up by captain Lewis Fiorini.
Shrewsbury manager Gavin Cowan set his side up in a 3-4-1-2 formation but they struggled to create clear chances. The hosts managed only three shots all game, with none on target, while Stockport registered 15 attempts and forced goalkeeper Cameron Gregory into four saves. Possession was also dominated by the visitors, who held 57% of the ball.
Cowan made four changes during the match, introducing Luca Hoole, Isaac Fletcher, Jeval Thompson-Mckenzie and Harry Lythgoe Fallon from the bench. Will Gray received a late yellow card in stoppage time for a foul.
The result adds to a mixed run of form for Shrewsbury. Their recent results include a win over Grimsby and draws with Colchester and Crewe, but also losses to Tranmere and now Stockport.
Attention now turns to league action, with Exeter City visiting The Croud Meadow this Saturday. Exeter currently occupy 20th place in the table, offering Shrewsbury a chance to improve their league standing. The full squad available for that match is listed on our squad page.
